The City of Memphis Grizzlies, Tennessee could sue the National Basketball Association because of lost games. NBA Commissioner David Stern says that even more games may be canceled because of the standoff between the owners of NBA teams, and the players on them. City attorneys were directed to explore all of the available options for recovering lost monies through a resolution passed by the Memphis City Council on Tuesday. This may even include a lawsuit to the National Basketball Association to recover those funds.
The NBA preseason games have already been canceled by Commissioner Stern, as well as the first two weeks of the regular season of NBA action. If a deal isn't reached soon, Stern has threatened to cancel games throughout the Christmas season as well. The revenue streams that come from these NBA games will be affected by this, and they were intended to help pay off bonds that were backed by the city, to finance the FedEx Forum NBA Arena that cost over $250 million. The Arena was opened in 2004 to host the Memphis Grizzlies.
